They could be the death of who you were, as you move on to who you are.
Are we frozen in time when we say “I’ve always done it this way?”
I talk about this professionally all the time, but it’s just as real and relevant in your personal life, and maybe even more so.
If it ain’t broke don’t fix it, right!? Ok, that’s a rhetorical question, because come on, really? Do we even think like that anymore?
Well, yes. We do. I know I find myself stuck there sometimes.
But, here’s the thing.
Oftentimes we don’t even realize there’s another way, or that we should be asking questions. Questions like, could I be doing this better, faster, easier? Or, does this even make sense in my life anymore?
The reality is that we evolve. Everything evolves, and so should our thinking.
Easier said then done.
The moment you define something and stick to it, you often never even think to revisit it. Especially if you think it’s working, because maybe in some ways it is. I mean at some point it served us, which is why it exists at all.
But, if you keep doing what you’ve always done. you’ll keep getting what you’ve always got. And is that what you want anymore? Hint, hint, that’s a question.
Six years ago this hit me hard. Sitting on an oversized, fluffy, cozy couch. You know what I’m talking about, one that can swallow you whole, in a good way?! Barely able to get the words out of my mouth, shaken and thinking: am I even allowed to think this, let alone talk about it?
Like I needed to ask permission.
I’d made a promise to myself early in life and I decided at some point that it was my truth. Now I was talking to a complete stranger (who later became my therapist) about something that was always off the table for me, not even allowed in my vocabulary. I’d allowed it to define me for years, and now it trapped me. Because of that, I never stopped to think about it, to ask the right questions, any questions.
I stopped evolving because I held my beliefs so close to my identity that there was no water. Water I needed for growth. Growth happens slowly over time, we have to nurture it, water it. We show up every day and we care for it. Gently. When we stop questioning our beliefs, they can get us stuck.
It’s okay for your beliefs to evolve with you. As you grow, you change, and they change too. Or you stay where you are, which is perfectly okay too, if that serves you.
Ask yourself questions that bring you to life, and guide you into the next, better version of you!
How ’bout you, do you have any truths or beliefs that you’ve not questioned lately that need a refresh?
