I certainly don’t consider myself a biohacker, but I am all about finding ways to easily incorporate practices into my health and wellness routine, with science backed results.

It’s also super important to me that I practice what I preach, and so I always commit to adding the things that I offer as services in my business, into my own life first. So I have been using the portable sauna, and although I am drenched when done, it’s been so great for my health and mindset.

Infrared saunas have gained popularity for their health benefits, offering a rejuvenating experience without the need for traditional high-heat saunas like the ones we’re used to in our local gyms.

Using heat therapy has been around for ages, and the research still stands strong, that there’s many benefits to reap from this age old wellness treatment.

So What’s An Infrared Sauna?

We use a portable infrared sauna in our wellness space. It’s compact and uses the heat to penetrate the body more effectively than a conventional steam or dry sauna, warming you from the inside out rather than heating the air around you. It’s lightweight, and allows you to get many of the benefits of sauna therapy without a dedicated sauna room.

The Science Behind Infrared Heat

Infrared heat works by emitting a wavelength that penetrates the skin deeply. Unlike traditional saunas that rely on high temperatures to create steam, infrared saunas produce a lower, more tolerable heat while still achieving therapeutic benefits. Studies suggest that infrared wavelengths can reach as far as 1.5 inches beneath the skin surface, targeting tissues, muscles, and even fat cells, which promotes sweating, increased blood circulation, and relaxation.

Key Benefits of Portable Infrared Saunas

1. Detoxification

One of the main reasons people turn to saunas is for detoxification. When infrared heat penetrates the body, it promotes sweating, which is the body’s natural way of expelling toxins. Heavy metals, chemicals, and other pollutants can be flushed out via sweat, improving overall well-being. A study published in The Journal of Environmental and Public Health found that sweating induced by saunas may help reduce the levels of heavy metals in the body, supporting the idea that regular infrared sauna use could enhance natural detoxification processes.

2. Improved Circulation and Heart Health

Infrared heat increases heart rate and improves blood circulation, which can have cardiovascular benefits. The heat causes blood vessels to expand, improving circulation throughout the body. Research from the Journal of the American College of Cardiology found that sauna therapy could have positive effects on blood pressure, cholesterol, and even arterial health. Studies indicate that regular use of infrared saunas could reduce blood pressure over time and benefit those with heart-related issues.

3. Pain Relief and Muscle Recovery

Infrared saunas are widely used by athletes and those with chronic pain conditions for muscle relaxation and recovery. The penetrating heat helps relieve tension, reduce soreness, and promote the healing of minor injuries. Studies suggest that infrared therapy can help reduce muscle stiffness, improve recovery, and decrease inflammation, making it ideal for those with joint pain or arthritis. For example, a study in Pain Research and Management showed that infrared heat could effectively reduce pain in patients with chronic back pain and fibromyalgia.

4. Weight Loss and Metabolic Boost

An infrared sauna session can increase heart rate, mirroring the effects of moderate exercise. According to The Journal of the American Medical Association, an infrared sauna session can burn up to 300–600 calories in 30 minutes as the body works to cool itself. This “passive exercise” effect may aid in weight management when combined with a healthy diet and exercise routine.

5. Skin Health and Anti-Aging Benefits

The heat generated by infrared saunas promotes collagen production and enhances blood circulation, which can lead to healthier, glowing skin. Regular infrared sauna use has been associated with reduced wrinkles, improved skin elasticity, and fewer signs of aging. A study in Dermatology and Therapy found that consistent sauna use may improve skin quality and texture, potentially making it a natural way to maintain youthful skin.

How Often Should You Use an Infrared Sauna?

The optimal frequency of infrared sauna use depends on individual goals, health status, and tolerance. For general wellness, using a portable infrared sauna 2-3 times per week can yield noticeable benefits. For specific therapeutic goals, such as chronic pain relief or detoxification, using it 4-5 times a week may be recommended.

Beginners should start with 10-15 minute sessions at a lower heat setting (100–130°F) and gradually increase to 20-30 minutes as their body adapts. Experienced users may use it 4-5 times per week, but it’s crucial to listen to your body and ensure adequate hydration.

Session Recommendations:

  1. First Week: 2-3 times, 10-15 minutes per session at 100–110°F
  2. After 1 Month: 3-4 times per week, 20-25 minutes per session at 110–120°F
  3. Advanced Use: Up to 5 times per week, 30-40 minutes per session at 120–130°F

Always consult a healthcare professional before starting sauna therapy, especially if you have pre-existing health conditions.

Safety Tips and Considerations

  • Hydration: Drink water before, during, and after your sauna session to replenish fluids lost through sweating.
  • Pre- and Post-Sauna Care: Avoid alcohol and drugs before using the sauna, as they can impair your body’s ability to regulate heat.
  • Cooling Down: Let your body cool down naturally after each session. Avoid cold showers immediately after, as this can cause blood vessels to constrict abruptly.
  • Medical Conditions: People with cardiovascular issues, respiratory conditions, or those who are pregnant should seek medical advice before using a sauna.

With our portable sauna blanket, you’ll want to be fully clothed in pants, long sleeves, and socks. This puppy gets hot so you want to ensure that your skin is covered, and this also helps to promote more of the sweating effect.

With proven benefits in detoxification, circulation, pain relief, weight loss, and skin health, infrared saunas offer a holistic approach to wellness. Remember, consistency is key, so find a frequency that works for you and gradually increase your usage as you build tolerance.I’ve learned, a little can go a long way, and you certainly need to work your way into more heat and longer sessions.

With proper use, an infrared sauna can become a powerful tool in your wellness journey. From athletes to those looking to uplevel their wellness game, these saunas are an accessible, effective way to support overall health.
